IMPROMPTU
ENTERPRISE QUERY AND REPORTING

Cognos Impromptu is the enterprise answer for database query and reporting on the desktop and the Web. It gives users the freedom to quickly and easily create any query or report, while providing administrators with the flexible scheduling and distribution capabilities they demand.

Data in a Business Context Impromptu presents information the way managers view their business—not the way the database is structured. The Impromptu catalog is a repository of business knowledge and data-access rules that organize data using the terminology of the business, so users are insulated from database complexities such as SQL syntax, table joins, and cryptic field names. Presenting data in this way makes it easy for users to navigate within a database and assemble reports.

With Impromptu, users benefit from:

Standard Reporting

  • Distribute systems of reports with sub-reports and report-to-report drill-through.
  • Roll out standard reports across the enterprise quickly and easily with Impromptu’s query and reporting capabilities.
  • Choose specific items or values to view within a report with picklists and prompts.
  • Access a variety of filter capabilities with the filter button drop-down list.
  • Use conditional filters, highlighting, and displays to conduct exception reporting.
Ad Hoc Reporting
  • Build queries and reports from one integrated module.
  • Create list and crosstab-style reports step-by-step with the report wizard.

For IS, Impromptu permits central administration and worry-free security and control:

The Impromptu Catalog

  • Store prompts in catalogs to be used throughout your reporting applications.
  • Provides a LAN-based repository of business knowledge and data-access rules.
  • Offers a single point of maintenance.
  • Insulates end users from the database.
  • Leverages existing metadata stores by allowing administrators to create, modify, or delete catalog contents through an OLE Automation interface.
  • Optimizes performance by using table weighting to prioritize database table join orders.
Built-In Security
  • Administrators can easily create user profiles and classes that determine how the database is accessed and what users see in their catalog.
  • IS has precise control over client/server processing and costly query activity.
Flexible Architecture
  • Inheritance-based administration means that changes to business rules, permission sets, and query activities automatically cascade throughout the organization.
  • Reports can be processed on a Windows client or on a UNIX server.
Impromptu Request Server

Impromptu provides maximum flexibility by moving query processing from the Impromptu client to the Impromptu Request Server for UNIX. Users place requests in the server's job queue. Once the server has executed the request, the result set can be accessed by Impromptu on the client, distributed by e-mail, or even published as an HTML document. Users can connect and view reports when it's most convenient. And queries can be scheduled to run at off-peak times, so standard and recurring reports can be generated overnight, even with the PCs shut down.

Moving the query processing to the server means that requests to any number of databases can be centrally managed. And large volumes of data can be processed without impacting performance. Network traffic is reduced because only the result set needs to be sent to the PC, which means more effective use of computing resources.

Impromptu Request Server allows you to:

  • Store result sets in alternate data sources
  • Schedule type-in SQL reports
  • Support Impromptu 5.0 and earlier clients in the same environment
